Windmill launches free immersive digital platform Girl Asleep: An Interactive Journey
Acclaimed national theatre company Windmill Theatre Co has today launched a free digital learning package for their award winning coming-of-age film Girl Asleep.
The two-part offering, aimed at students, teachers and general film fans, gives an imaginative and dynamic insight into the making of Girl Asleep from the ground up, alongside a digital study guide focused on delivering innovative student learning outcomes in the classroom.
Girl Asleep: An Interactive Journey is an immersive online microsite that allows young people to explore the set of the film, meet the cast and crew, and take a quiz to discover their ultimate film role.
It allows users to experience what it’s like to work on a film set through interviews with key creatives and follow the journey of teenage actor Maiah Stewardson from casting call to premiere. As Stewardson takes users through each step of her journey they answer questions that will assign them the filmmaking role best suited to their strengths, interests and personalities.
This is available for schools as part of a larger Digital Education Package that also includes a Digital Study Guide linked to English, The Arts: Media Arts and Drama, and Health and Physical Education learning areas of the Australian curriculum for Years 9-10. The digital study guide features videos, soundtracks and photography from the film and is rich with activity ideas, curriculum tasks and other quality learning resources.
Director Rosemary Myers says “At Windmill delivering high quality learning outcomes is at the core of our company ethos. With this education package we hope to set the bar when it comes to providing a platform for engagement with the arts and the development of creative literacy in the digital space.”
A DVD copy of the film and links to online resources have been delivered free to more than 160 South Australian schools as part of this project, courtesy of project partners Lang Foundation and the South Australian Department for Education.
Produced entirely in South Australia, Girl Asleep has enchanted audiences around the world, having screened in 114 cities in 25 countries since its premiere at the 2015 Adelaide Film Festival.
Girl Asleep was Windmill’s first foray into the world of film, and in August last year, the company launched Windmill Pictures, a new arm dedicated to developing screen projects from Windmill’s live theatre repertoire.
